Diploma vs Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management: which level is right for you?

You have decided to formalise your management career with a nationally recognised qualification. You know the Business Services Training Package is where you need to be. But then you hit the first fork in the road: the BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management, or the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management?

Both qualifications are offered at AIMT in Melbourne. Both are respected by employers across Australia. And both can open doors to well-paying management roles. But they are designed for different people at different stages of their career, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money.

This article breaks down exactly what separates the two qualifications so you can make the right call from the start.

The short answer

If you are currently working as a team leader, supervisor, or mid-level manager and want a formal qualification to match your experience or accelerate your career, the BSB50420 Diploma is almost certainly the right starting point.

If you are already operating at a senior management level and want to formalise your strategic and executive capabilities, or if you have already completed a Diploma and are ready for the next step, the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma is where you belong.

How do the two qualifications compare at a glance?

What does each qualification actually focus on?

BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management

The Diploma sits at AQF Level 5 and is built around operational leadership. The skills you develop here are the ones you use every day as a practising manager: running effective teams, implementing operational plans, communicating with authority, managing performance, handling business risk, and thinking critically.

The six core units cover emotional intelligence, workplace relationships, team effectiveness, operational planning, communication, and critical thinking.

The six elective units at AIMT add people performance, customer service, continuous improvement, meetings management, risk management, and project work.

This is a qualification designed to make you a better, more confident, and more credentialed manager of people and day-to-day operations. It answers the question: how do I lead my team more effectively right now?

BSB60420 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management

The Advanced Diploma sits at AQF Level 6 and shifts the focus from operational to strategic. At this level, you are no longer just managing a team or a department. You are thinking about the organisation as a whole: how strategy is set and communicated, how change is led, how resources are allocated at an enterprise level, and how senior leaders influence culture and direction.

The qualification requires 10 units, comprising 5 core and 5 elective units. The level of complexity in the assessment is higher, and the expectation is that you are drawing on real management experience as you work through the course.

This is a qualification for people who are already leading at a senior level and want the formal credential to match, or who have completed a Diploma and are ready to take the next step in their career.

What are the entry requirements?

BSB50420 Diploma

At the national level, the BSB50420 has no formal prerequisites. You can enter directly without having completed a Certificate IV or any other prior qualification. AIMT does require students to complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment before enrolment begins.

For international students, a minimum IELTS (General) score of 6.0 is required, or an equivalent result via PTE Academic (score 50), TOEFL internet-based test (score 46), or Cambridge English Advanced CAE (score 162). Results older than two years are not accepted.

BSB60420 Advanced Diploma

The Advanced Diploma has formal entry requirements set by the national training package. To enrol, you must have either:

  • Completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma from the BSB Training Package (current or superseded equivalent versions), or
  • Two years of equivalent full-time relevant work experience in an operational or leadership role

The same English language requirements apply for international students as for the Diploma: IELTS 6.0, PTE 50, TOEFL 46, or Cambridge CAE 162.

If you have not yet met the entry requirements for the Advanced Diploma but you are keen to reach that level, the most straightforward path is to complete the BSB50420 Diploma at AIMT first, then progress directly into the Advanced Diploma.

How long does each course take at AIMT?

The BSB50420 Diploma is delivered full-time over 52 weeks, which includes 40 weeks of face-to-face classroom instruction and up to 12 weeks of scheduled breaks.

The BSB60420 Advanced Diploma is delivered full-time over 60 weeks at AIMT, reflecting the additional depth and complexity of the qualification.

Both courses are delivered face-to-face at AIMT’s campus in Footscray, Victoria. This means you learn alongside other working professionals with direct access to experienced trainers.

What jobs do graduates go into?

Both qualifications open doors across the same broad range of industries, but the seniority of the roles typically differs.

Role More common after Diploma More common after Advanced Diploma
Team leader / supervisor Yes
Department manager Yes Yes
Operations manager Yes Yes
Business manager Yes Yes
General manager Yes
Executive director Yes
CEO / Managing director Yes
Project manager Yes Yes

Role allocation is indicative. Career outcomes depend on industry, prior experience, and employer requirements.

Where does each qualification lead next?

Completing the BSB50420 Diploma gives you direct access to the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma, which AIMT also offers. It can also support credit entry into the second year of an undergraduate business or management degree at Australian universities, depending on the institution.

Completing the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma positions you for senior and executive roles, and in many cases provides a recognised pathway into bachelor or postgraduate study at Australian universities. It is an AQF Level 6 qualification, which sits at the same level as an associate degree and one step below a bachelor degree in the Australian framework.

Which one is right for you?

Choose the BSB50420 Diploma if you are:

  • A team leader or supervisor wanting formal recognition of your management skills
  • A mid-level manager looking to move into senior roles
  • New to formal management qualifications and unsure where to start
  • A career changer coming from a technical background such as automotive, trades, healthcare, or logistics
  • An international professional seeking an Australian-recognised qualification without prior study requirements

Choose the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma if you are:

  • Already operating at a senior or executive management level
  • A graduate of the BSB50420 Diploma ready for the next step
  • Someone with two or more years of full-time management experience who wants to formalise their skills at the highest vocational level
  • Targeting roles such as general manager, executive director, or CEO
  • Aiming for entry into a bachelor or postgraduate business program

Can you do both?

Yes, and it is a common path. Many AIMT students complete the BSB50420 Diploma, enter or advance in a management role, and then return to complete the BSB60420 Advanced Diploma when they are ready to move to a senior level. Because both qualifications are offered at AIMT, you can plan your entire management education pathway with a single provider, with trainers who already know your background and learning style.
